Assignment: A Photographic Alphabet

a2

I give out the occasional assignment to my students, and here is one I particularly like.
For this assignment, you are trying to find elements in a scene that form letters. Not a sign that has letters on it, but pieces of wood that make a K shape, the side of a swing that forms an A, or metal bars on a firepit screen that make an X.

This kind of assignment is also good for taking a look through your archive of images to see what you may have already taken that contains letters!

For these shots, I used a single flash in an umbrella, which …

Today’s athlete shoot is of softball player Sam DeBortoli. This was the second baseball/softball related shoot that I did, so I started up with something different. (227)

Behind The Photo: Air Canada Flight 646 Crash

Hard to belive how fast time flies. It has been 25 years now since I took this photograph, which basically led to my almost two-decade career at the Telegraph-Journal. I’ve told the story behind the photograph more than a few times, but never put it down on here. (2643)

Canada Games Athletes-Diver Christian Zehmer and Kirsten MacDonald

Today’s portraits are of divers Christian Zehmer and Kirsten MacDonald, taken at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre in Saint John. Again, a two person shoot made me have to think about to come up with some good compositions. I started off with each of them standing on a diving board. …
